SUNDAY17th APRIL:

Beth Chatto
&
RHS Hyde Hall Gardens

Leave Horsham Carfax (Bandstand) 8.15am

Horsham Station 8.20am

Cost:- £22             (Please note that Society affiliation of the RHS means that we get free entry into Hyde Hall)

The Beth Chatto Gardens began in 1960 when the site was a wilderness. Facing all sorts of difficult conditions, Beth and Andrew Chatto set out to make homes for all the different plants they wished to grow. With dry and damp soil in both sun and shade they were able to put into practice what we now call Ecological Gardening

There is a series of four gardens, namely, Scree, Gravel, Woodland and Water with lush leafy plantings around a series of natural ponds.

A well-stocked nursery gives one the chance to buy a large variety of plants, between stops for refreshments in the tearoom.

A visit to the 360 acre RHS Hyde Hall estate is unforgettable in any season and allows visitors to immerse themselves in nature. Hyde Hall is an area of Essex that has very low rainfall and this, along with the soil type and exposed site, makes it a challenging area for gardening. You will see that by choosing the right plants for the right places it is possible to create a garden wonderland.

Lunch can be taken in the restaurant and then more plants can be bought in the large nursery

For this outing we will have the services of Bronwen Mills a superb Blue Badge Guide. She will be providing us with a wealth of interesting facts during our tour of the Romney Marshes, from Dungeness to Rye. We will visit one of the famous Romney Marsh churches in the hamlet of Brookland. There will be a stop for morning coffee & biscuits (included in the ticket) and you can enjoy an excellent Ploughman’s Lunch of local produce at The Royal Oak (this must be pre-ordered when buying your ticket and paid for [approx £7.80] on the day).

Great Dixter is the family home of the late Christopher Lloyd, who devoted his life to creating one of the most exciting gardens of our time. Incorporating many medieval buildings, the gardens surround the house. There is a wide range of interest from yew topiary, mixed borders, meadow flowers, ponds and the wonderful Exotic Garden. No gardening enthusiast should miss this opportunity. The afternoon ends with tea and cakes provided by the local WI (included in ticket)

Don’t miss this double helping of gardening thrills
